The highest-grossing animated film of all time is getting the English-language treatment.

Originally in Mandarin, Ne Zha 2 made $2.2 billion (yes, that’s billion with a “B”) worldwide when it was released earlier this year, and the English-language version is set to be released in theaters everywhere nationwide on Friday. The film is the sequel to Ne Zha from 2019, which grossed more than $740 million.

Ne Zha 2, which is being distributed by A24, is the story of a rebellious young boy, Ne Zha, born to mortal parents and feared by the gods for his wild and uncontrolled powers. Faced with an ancient force intent on destroying humanity, he’s got to grow up to become the hero the world needs.

Based on Chinese mythology, Ne Zha 2 was written and directed by Jiaozi (also known as Yu Yang), and is based on the character from the 16th Century novel Investiture of the Gods, in which Ne Zha is the reincarnation of a magic weapon. The film features a voice cast that includes Crystal Lee (Marvel Rivals) as the title character, Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Wicked) and Vincent Rodriguez III (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) as Ne Zha’s parents, Lady Yin and Li Jing, respectively, and Aleks Le as Ne Zha’s best friend Ao Bing.

From American Born Chinese to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, stories featuring pantheons from other cultures are not new in the United States. But while previous works have introduced the western world to characters from Chinese mythology such as the Monkey King, Ne Zha 2 is the first film to bring Ne Zha in front of American audiences. Its predecessor did not have a theatrical release in the United States—but is currently available on a number of streaming platforms. Fortunately, viewers do not need to have seen it in order to understand what’s happening in the sequel.

Ne Zha 2 is not rated and contains some crude humor as well as one scene of a family in emotional distress. It also has a runtime of just under two and a half hours—so parents, you can decide if it’s appropriate for your kiddos and if they can handle sitting still for that long.
