Cocona, a member of the Japan-based global pop group XG, has publicly come out as AFAB  transmasculine non-binary.

The announcement was made in both Japanese and English on Saturday, Cocona’s 20th birthday, through a heartfelt Instagram post. The performer reflected on their journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

“Earlier this year, I had top surgery,” Cocona wrote. “I was born and perceived as female, but that label never represented who I truly am. I live in a way that feels more masculine and true to who I am.”

In the post, they described the process as the most difficult challenge they have faced: “The hardest thing I’ve ever faced was accepting and embracing myself. But as I slowly began to do that, I was able to open a new door. That moment changed the way I see and understand the world, and it gave me the courage and strength to grow. Now, I can finally say, ‘There’s nothing wrong with who I am inside.’”

According to Teen Vogue, Cocona uses they/them and he/him pronouns.

Alongside the announcement, Cocona shared images from a personal photoshoot taken by fellow XG member Jurin, with makeup by group member Chisa. In the photos, Cocona sports an open blazer, revealing scars from top surgery, and poses with a red flower.

The post received widespread support from fans and peers in the music industry. Members of K-pop girl group aespa, Ningning and Giselle, as well as Sophia and Manon of KATSEYE, publicly liked the post, showing solidarity.

XG’s CEO and artistic director, Simon (Jakops), also shared a statement and group photo in support of Cocona on his own Instagram. “I am deeply moved and filled with respect as Cocona courageously shared their passion with the world,” Simon wrote. “I will continue to provide sincere support so that each member can be truly respected not only as a ‘working artist’ but also as a person.”

Cocona expressed gratitude toward their XG bandmates, management, and family for their support. They concluded the message with a note to fans: “May these words gently light a spark in someone’s heart. And to everyone who needs it—may my love reach all of them.”

XG debuted in 2022 under XGALX and has since gained international recognition for their polished performances, multilingual lyrics, and messages of empowerment. Cocona’s coming out is seen as a significant moment for LGBTQ+ representation in Japanese and broader Asian pop music, with many K-pop fans also embracing XG as part of their space and fandoms. Cocona’s announcement adds to a recent string of LGBTQ+ representation in K-pop and K-pop adjacent spheres. This year, Bain from Just B announced he is gay during the group’s 2024 U.S. tour. Lara Raj and Megan Skiendiel of K-pop-adjacent act KATSEYE both shared that they are queer as well.

XG has recently achieved several career milestones. The group performed at Coachella 2025 as the only Japanese act on the lineup, closing the Sahara Stage to positive acclaim. The group also announced their first full-length album, THE CORE - 核, set for release on Jan. 23, 2026, and their second world tour, XG WORLD TOUR: THE CORE, beginning in February 2026.
