Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for Chief of War, an upcoming historical drama series co-created by and starring Jason Momoa. Set in late 18th Century Hawai‘i, the nine-episode series explores the efforts of Ka’iana, a real historical figure and Native Hawaiian warrior played by Momoa, as he seeks to unite the islands in the face of looming Western colonization.
Momoa, who is part Native Hawaiian, is deeply involved in the production, serving not only as lead actor but also as co-creator, writer, executive producer, and director of the season’s final episode. He developed the series alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, a frequent collaborator who also shares Hawaiian roots.
The cast is made up largely of Polynesian talent, including Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent), Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett), Cliff Curtis, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, and Kaina Makua, among others. The show is produced by Fifth Season, a subsidiary of CJ ENM, and Chernin Entertainment.
According to Apple, Chief of War is inspired by true events and promises to deliver a sweeping retelling of a pivotal era in Hawaiian history. The series will debut globally on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on Friday, Aug. 1 with new episodes released weekly through Sept. 19.
