Thai American actress and Hadestown Broadway standout Myra Molloy has been cast as a lead in Girls Like Girls, the upcoming coming-of-age film from pop star and director Hayley Kiyoko.
Inspired by Kiyoko’s 2015 viral hit and its beloved music video, the film follows two young women navigating first love and identity during a transformative summer.
Molloy will portray Sonya, the object of affection for Coley, played by Maya da Costa. Da Costa, who is of Vietnamese and Portuguese descent, is best known for her performance as Maya Longette in Hulu’s Under the Bridge.
In an Instagram post, Molloy wrote, “girls like girls. hayley, where do I even begin. thank you for gifting me this opportunity of a lifetime. glg has such a huge chunk of my heart and everyone else’s who has followed you along this journey for a decade. how f*cking lucky are we. happy mf pride. i love you - xoxo Sonya”
The film marks Kiyoko’s directorial debut on a feature-length project and is co-written by Kiyoko and actress Stefanie Scott, who portrays Coley in the original video. Kiyoko previously expanded the Girls Like Girls universe into a novel in 2023.
