Canadian entertainer and digital media star Lilly Singh has officially joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s new expansion team set to begin play in 2026. Singh, known for her groundbreaking career on YouTube and late-night television, is not only an investor but will also serve in a unique leadership role as the team’s chief hype officer.

In this dual role, Singh will be responsible for building community excitement, helping shape in-game fan experiences, and amplifying the team’s brand both online and offline. In an interview with the New York Times, Singh said, “I just love cheering on people, but namely I love cheering women on. I’m an over-the-top person, and I think that’s exactly what you need to be a team hype officer. That means cheering on the team at the games, bringing some of my international friends to the games and talking about the Tempo on and offline. I love basketball and I love Toronto. I’m a Toronto girlie through and through.”

Tempo president Teresa Resch also told the New York Times, that Singh’s name came up often as someone to bring in. “Lilly speaks to so many different people, and we really want the Toronto Tempo to represent all of Canada, to be a place where people can feel welcome and feel part of this energy,” Resch said.

Singh also brings prior sports ownership experience from her investment in NWSL team Angel City FC.
