Tony and Olivier Award-winning performer Lea Salonga will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The nomination was submitted by the Manila International Film Festival, making Salonga the first Filipina and fourth person of Filipino ancestry overall to receive the honor. Past honorees include Bruno Mars, comedian Rob Schneider and Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas. Reacting on Instagram, Salonga wrote, “Just now woke up to this bit of amazing news!!!” adding her thanks to MIFF for the recognition.
The Filipina singer and actress, who rose to international fame for originating the role of Kim in the West End production of Miss Saigon, will be honored in the live theater/performance category. Salonga made history in 1991 as the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award for her Broadway debut.
Salonga is also widely known for being the singing voice for two Disney princesses: Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan. Her more recent credits include a guest starring role on Fox’s The Cleaning Lady and voice work on Netflix’s K-pop Demon Hunters.
