Grammy-winning artist and composer Laufey has announced the launch of The Laufey Foundation, a new initiative aimed at expanding access to music education for young people, particularly through youth orchestra programs. The Icelandic Chinese jazz musician, who began her own musical journey in similar programs before earning a Presidential Scholarship to Berklee College of Music, says the foundation reflects her desire to give back.
“The support and scholarships I received as a child have directly led to the career I have now,” Laufey shared on Instagram, adding that it has long been her dream to support the next generation of musicians.
The foundation’s first round of grants will go to several prominent organizations, including Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, the LA Philharmonic’s YOLA program, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, and two of Carnegie Hall’s national ensembles—NYO2 and NYO Jazz. Plans to expand global support are already underway.
Founding partners include AWAL, AEG Presents, and Steinway & Sons, with Warner Chappell, Catbird, and Gibson joining as benefactor partners. Laufey will also donate a portion of proceeds from her Mei Mei the Bunny plush toy to the foundation, further supporting its mission to make music more accessible to all.
