Wasian Avengers, assemble.
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Laufey just dropped the music video for her new jazz pop single “Madwoman,” and it's the ultimate Wasian cinematic universe crossover event we didn’t know we needed.
Against a classic 1960s backdrop, the Warren Fu-directed video features a stacked cast of Gen-Z celebrities who all share mixed white and Asian heritage:
Laufey (Chinese Icelandic) plays the madwoman obsessed with her toxic lover. Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams (Korean Canadian) plays the vexing heartthrob whom Laufey just can’t seem to quit. Olympic gold medalist figure skater Alysa Liu (Chinese American), The Summer I Turned Pretty actress Lola Tung (Chinese and Swedish American), and KATSEYE member Megan Skiendiel (Singaporean and Chinese American) round out the cast as Laufey’s besties. Actresses Chase Sui Wonders (Chinese American) and Havana Rose Liu (Chinese and Irish American) also make cameo appearances as magazine cover models.
According to an interview with MTV, Laufey first had the idea for this all-star music video last year at a dinner with some Wasian friends—including Havana, Tung, and Wonders. “How sick would it be if we all did a music video together?” she asked the table.
Fans realized the idea may have finally come to fruition when the musician began posting cast reveal teasers on her social media last week. With many of the cast members literally named the hottest mixed-Asian celebrities of our time, it’s no wonder anticipation for the music video was at a fever pitch by the time the full cast list was announced.
“Laufey singlehandedly brought five fandoms together,” said one comment under the music video. “She collected all the Wasian baddies like Pokémon,” said another. Others have dubbed the quintet the “Wasian Avengers” and the “Wasian royal family.”
Since the Hollywood heyday of the Asian Canadian king himself, Keanu Reeves, mixed white and Asian celebrities have seen a steady rise in pop culture prominence over the years. But the community seems to be having an especially dominant moment of popularity right now, from athletes Eileen Gu and Alysa Liu winning big at the Winter Olympics, to Laufey and Olivia Rodrigo topping music charts, to actors like Williams and Tung getting tapped for leading roles on television.
“Madwoman” feels like an invitation to spend a few minutes soaking by the pool, celebrating that ongoing pop culture momentum. And what an iconic celebration it has been. Thank you, Laufey, for your service to the great nation of Wasia.
