KATSEYE’s Sophia Laforteza announces mental health hiatus

KATSEYE leader Sophia Laforteza is temporarily stepping away from the group's upcoming promotional activities to focus on her mental health and wellness, HYBE and Geffen Records announced on Friday.

In a statement shared with fans on Weverse, the companies said Laforteza has been receiving support and, following consultations with medical professionals, "it has been advised that she take dedicated time for extended rest and ongoing care to ensure a full recovery." The statement added that while Laforteza is "eager to perform alongside her members," the "health, safety and long-term well-being" of the group's artists will remain the companies’ highest priority.

Laforteza also shared a personal message with fans on her Instagram Story, calling the decision a difficult one. "It truly breaks my heart to have to miss out on a lot," she wrote. "Making this decision wasn't easy, but I'm learning that health has to come first." She added that she has realized, "if I don't take care of my mind and body now, I won't be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long," and thanked fans for their patience and support as she focuses on recovery.

The announcement comes as KATSEYE enters one of its busiest promotional periods. The global girl group's second EP, Wild, is set for release on Thursday, following the release of the singles "Pinky Up" and "Animal." Earlier this week, the group also premiered its documentary, KATSEYE: Wild Hearts, and is currently slated to perform at Head in the Clouds Los Angeles on Saturday and Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Music Festival on Aug. 29, before continuing promotions and embarking on a global tour later this year.

Laforteza's absence marks the second member hiatus for KATSEYE this year. Member Manon Bannerman has been on hiatus since February to focus on her health and well-being as well, with no timeline announced for her return.

With both Laforteza and Bannerman temporarily away from group activities, KATSEYE's active lineup currently consists of Lara Raj, Daniela Avanzini, Megan Skiendiel and Yoonchae Jeung.
