Happy July, everyone. It’s slightly miserable out there; heat waves, tornadoes, wildfires. And it seems like the world around us could be crumbling—we are truly in some unprecedented times. But it is summer after all and what else can we do but dance through it? Here’s a list of some brand new releases that are sparkly, feel-good, and make you forget that it’s a bit scary out there.
“Busy Work” by Sabrina Song
Brooklyn-based Sabrina Song’s new album You Could Stay In One Spot, and I’d Love You The Same is full of poetic musings about growing up while having your heart broken. The singer-songwriter accompanies her lyrics, which capture love and heartbreak alike beautifully, with her soft voice, which perfectly expresses the emotions behind the words. “Busy Work” is a standout; it features the lyric that is the album’s namesake, which is nestled among equally heartbreaking lines. The melody is just as memorable, and it’s definitely a song you’ll keep on repeat.
“Crush” by sunkis ft. ASTN and Bren Joy
Everyone loves a little summer crush and we’re right in the thick of crushin’ season. Crushes also often come with playlists…ones to daydream along to! This new release by Chinese American artist sunkis featuring ASTN and Bren Joy will fit perfectly into your playlist. It’s a classic pop song with smooth vocals and fun beats that’ll make you get off your feet, let loose, and dance.
“Honey” by Shef’s Kiss
New York-based singer-songwriter Shef’s Kiss debuted her brand new single “honey” at a live show earlier this year but released it just in time for the end of summer. This pop-rock song has a nostalgic ‘00s sound reminiscent of something like Paramore, and will definitely have you singing along. With her strong vocals invoking female rage and the energetic drum backing, this song will get you off your feet.
“Walking In The Park” by Layton Wu
You can have this song on during a stroll in the park, or a long drive to a beach, or while you’re doing laundry. Anywhere, really, despite the name of the tune. Taiwanese artist Layton Wu loves experimenting with beats for his songs, so don’t be surprised if you find something in his discography for every part of your life. “Walking In The Park” prominently features a synth with audible finger snaps to bring the beat forward. It’s what some might call a “certified bop.”
“Shimmer” by Agami ft. Gokul
Agami’s new release “Shimmer” is sparkly, and full of infectious energy. It starts mellow but don’t let that fool you, it builds up quickly and intensifies with a strong string focus. It swiftly transitions into a percussion heavy track and the release feels cathartic. You’ll definitely want to add this high-energy track by the South Asian trio to your summer playlist and keep it there for months to come. Might we suggest a workout playlist?
