Astrology with Alice: Welcome to Astrology with Alice, a monthly astrology column aimed at helping readers understand the vibes of the month ahead in plain English. As a Taiwanese immigrant who grew up in Los Angeles, I specialize in combining western astrology with eastern philosophy. I’ve taught modern astrology through the lens of Buddhism and Taoism, and I also draw from the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Knowing the movements of the planets can help us make decisions around our careers, relationships, family. As the planets move around in the sky, they shift the energetic vibes we experience on Earth, and I believe in flowing with energy instead of fighting it—to work smarter, not harder. So join me on our monthly planetary lowdowns and learn how you, too, can ride the cosmic waves!

Venus, the planet of love and values, is camping out in adventure-loving Sagittarius from Nov. 30 through Dec. 24, which means that the energy of the 2025 holiday shopping marathon will be colored by Venus’s ride through the sign of the philosopher. The vibe will be meaning oriented and less traditional than normal, so we’re likely to stand in stores this holiday thinking, “None of this feels right.” And while this means you’re attuned to the cosmos, it won’t help you figure out what to get your loved ones—but don’t worry, we’ve got this. We just have to figure out some ground rules.

Sagittarius is the zodiac’s truth-teller and eternal optimist all rolled into one restless, philosophy spouting, wanderlusty package. And when Venus—our cosmic picker—hangs out in a sign like Sag, our values shift towards experiences over objects, meaning over materialism, and honesty over pretense. Sagittarius wants gifts that expand our worldview or make us laugh. It wants meaning. Everything else can stay on the shelf.

Think of Venus in Sagittarius as that friend who always has a well-timed joke when we start to take ourselves too seriously, or that bestie who takes you on a trip to help you get over a breakup and reminds you that there’s still a big world out there waiting for you. This transit doesn’t do lukewarm. It wants gift giving to feel like an adventure, to be a revelation, or, at the very least, to turn into a good story later. Sagittarius’s philosophy is simple: if it doesn’t spark curiosity, create joy, or promise freedom, then why are we even wrapping it?

Think of Venus in Sagittarius as that friend who always has a well-timed joke when we start to take ourselves too seriously, or that bestie who takes you on a trip to help you get over a breakup and reminds you that there’s still a big world out there waiting for you.

Here’s what you need to know about Sag energy: it’s ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion, luck, and going overboard in the best possible way. Sagittarius is symbolized by the archer, who is always aiming for something beyond the horizon. This sign doesn’t just want to just give gifts; it wants to give possibilities. While Virgo energy drives us to research the perfect practical present and Cancer energy gets us to knit scarves with love in every stitch, Sagittarius energy wants to hand you a key to somewhere you’ve never been—literally and metaphorically.

This sign is associated with higher learning, philosophy, international travel, and our personal belief systems. And when Venus moves through Sagittarius, we start valuing growth over security, adventure over comfort, truth over politeness. Suddenly, that expensive “it” gadget that everybody’s been drooling over starts to feel hollow compared to funding something that’ll actually broaden your perspective through new experiences.

But let’s also talk about the shadowed side of this transit. Venus in Sagittarius can also spur us to be a little preachy about our gift-giving philosophy. We might find ourselves giving lectures about consumerism while our families just want to know what sweater size we wear. The key this holiday is to remember that Sagittarius is also the sign of humor and optimism, so keep it light and make it fun. If you’re going to revolutionize gift giving, at least make people laugh while you’re doing it!

Sagittarius is also a fire sign and Sagittarian fire energy is like wildfire—a little unpredictable and very alive. So think of gifts that change the recipient’s trajectory, even if just slightly (and definitely go gentle on the Tauruses, Cancers, and Virgos—they no likey change. Is scary!). Also, Venus-in-Sagittarius vibes can feel like a breath of fresh air after years of collective trauma and limitations (I mean, I would list the reasons why, but…*points at the world*) because it wants us to remember what possibility feels like, so what we want to do is give gifts that say “you’re alive in a big world that you deserve to explore” instead of “here’s another thing to dust.”

So this December, ditch the obligatory offerings. Prioritize meaning, because Sagittarius energy knows what we all suspect, which is that most presents are future garage sale items. But a shared adventure or a real belly laugh? Now that sticks around forever.

Here’s a handy sign-by-sign gift giving guide for this holiday season that takes Venus’s  influence into account. Look up your loved ones’ signs to see what sort of Sagittarius-inspired gifts will land with them this year.

Sign-by-sign Venus-in-Sagittarius holiday gift guide

The astrological sign for aries.Aries (March 21-April 19)

The Sagittarius way: A “Yes Day” voucher—24 hours where you’re their designated driver/wingperson for whatever spontaneous plans they cook up, no questions asked.

Why it works: Gives them the freedom to be impulsive with a built-in accomplice. Aries loves to lead but hates going alone, and this gift says, “I’m ready for whatever chaos you’re planning.” Plus, they get to be the boss of the adventure.

The astrological sign for taurusTaurus (April 20-May 20)

The Sagittarius way: A luxurious cooking class in Ethiopian, Korean, or molecular gastronomy.

Why it works: It combines their love of sensual pleasure with horizon-expanding learning. Even comfort-loving Taurus secretly wants to be shaken up (gently, with snacks).

The astrological sign for geminiGemini (May 21-June 20)

The Sagittarius way: A Masterclass subscription or sign them up for that documentary streaming service that they keep mentioning.

Why it works: It feeds their curiosity. Gemini wants to know everything about everything, and this gives them a socially acceptable reason to info dump at parties.

The astrological sign for cancer.Cancer (June 21-July 22)

The Sagittarius way: A planned family adventure, like an escape room, road trip to see some weird roadside attractions, or a group cooking class.

Why it works: It creates new memories while honoring their need for togetherness. It also gets them out of the house without sacrificing their emotional security blanket (their peeps).

The astrological sign for leo.Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

The Sagittarius way: Tickets to something where they’re the star—karaoke room rental, an improv class, or a murder mystery dinner where they get the lead role.

Why it works: These activities celebrate Leos while adding a playful element of risk. Leos gets attention AND permission to be extra in a structured environment. Win-win!

The astrological sign for virgo.Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The Sagittarius way: A beautiful travel journal and a subscription for a language learning app for the country that they’ve been researching.

Why it works: These are practical enough to feel useful and aspirational enough to give Virgos permission to stop planning and start doing.

The astrological sign for libra.Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The Sagittarius way: Cultural experiences for two, like museum memberships, theater subscriptions, or an art class with a plus-one.

Why it works: These are beautiful experiences that they can share, and they satisfy Libra’s aesthetic needs while also working with the Sagittarian need for cultural expansion.

The astrological sign for scorpio.Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The Sagittarius way: Go for something deliciously weird—a mystery dinner theater, a ghost tour, a true-crime podcast live show.

Why it works: Depth meets adventure, intensity meets expansion? We’re speaking Scorpio’s language! Scorpios will get to go deep while actually getting the f*ck out of the house.

The astrological sign for sagittarius.Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

The Sagittarius way: Just book the trip. Or give them a globe and a dart. Or, heck, cash in an envelope marked “Adventure Fund.”

Why it works: It’s literally what they want. Stop overthinking it. They’ll love you for understanding that freedom is their love language.

The astrological sign for capricorn.Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The Sagittarius way: Get them something that a pragmatist would find “worthless,” like a spa day, comedy show tickets, or a sunset sail with zero networking potential.

Why it works: It forces them to receive joy without earning it first. Venus in Sagittarius wants them to give themselves permission to be unproductive (and like it).

The astrological sign for aquarius.Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The Sagittarius way: Consider a telescope for urban stargazing, a meditation float tank session, or a workshop on mushroom foraging or some other random skill.

Why it works: These are weird enough to interest them but are also expansive enough to match the holiday Sagittarian energy. Aquarius loves gifts that make other people ask, “Wait, what?”

The astrological sign for pisces.Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

The Sagittarius way: Go for creative adventures like art retreat weekends, music festival tickets, or photography walks in a new city.

Why it works: It channels their dreaminess into real-world exploration. Pisces will get to transcend reality, but in an actual different location for once.

Venus being in Sagittarius until Christmas Eve is basically the universe giving you cosmic permission to revolutionize your gift-giving game. Make it meaningful or make it hilarious. Aim to expand someone’s world or free them from stuckness. And if someone complains that your gift isn’t traditional enough? Tell them that Venus made you do it.
