Astrology with Alice: Welcome to Astrology with Alice, a monthly astrology column aimed at helping readers understand the vibes of the month ahead in plain English. As a Taiwanese immigrant who grew up in Los Angeles, I specialize in combining western astrology with eastern philosophy. I’ve taught modern astrology through the lens of Buddhism and Taoism, and I also draw from the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Knowing the movements of the planets can help us make decisions around our careers, relationships, family. As the planets move around in the sky, they shift the energetic vibes we experience on Earth, and I believe in flowing with energy instead of fighting it—to work smarter, not harder. So join me on our monthly planetary lowdowns and learn how you, too, can ride the cosmic waves!

Happy Lunar New Year!

This year is the Year of the Fire Horse. Sounds dramatic, right? Well, it sort of is. Fire horse energy is a big departure from the last couple of years of wood energy, and it aligns with Western astrology’s shift of major planets into fire signs this year.

Most of us are familiar with the 12 animal signs, but Chinese astrology actually also assigns an element to each sign every year. The five elements are: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. It takes 60 years to cycle through all the combinations. This is why turning 60 is such a big milestone in Asian cultures—you’ve seen your zodiacal return! Therefore, the fire horse hasn’t galloped across our skies since 1966, so we’ll only encounter it twice, at most, in our lifetimes.

The horse is already one of the most spirited signs in the Chinese zodiac. They’re energetic, independent, and reining them in is notoriously difficult. (Sort of sounds like Sagittarius, the other horsey-like sign in the Western zodiac, don’t you think?) Now, you add the element of fire to the horse, and you get a beast that doesn’t trot—it charges!

Fun fact: The fire horse personality has such a reputation for being difficult to control that Japanese birth rates fell in 1966 because people believed that fire horse women are too difficult to control and too willful. So parents literally avoided having daughters that year. (I don’t think this will happen again in 2026, because today, strong and independent women are major #goals.)

Fire is having a moment

As I mentioned earlier, the fire horse has returned during a similarly fiery time in Western astrology. Saturn and Neptune are in fiery Aries and Jupiter is heading into another potent fire sign, Leo, mid-year. The cosmic atmosphere according to both traditions predicts a hot and active forecast. We’re lifting the years of being in a watery fog (thanks, Pisces) and we’re trading it for forward-moving action (thank you, Aries!). Furthermore, last month, we also talked about how 2026 is a Wheel of Fortune year, which indicates that we’re going to finally stop spinning our wheels. This predicts a vibe similar to the horse’s action-oriented energy.

The alignment between both Western and Eastern systems isn’t so much a coincidence as it is an alignment. We could even call it confirmation. Both traditions are saying the same thing, which is that the time for sitting back and being passive is over. Now is the time to get in the driver’s seat and to make life happen. The fire horse doesn’t wait for permission, and neither does a sky full of planets in fire signs.

What fire horse energy asks of us

The horse is a sign of movement and freedom, while the fire element is all about passion and courage. When you blend those two together, what you get is energy that rewards initiative. You also get energy that’s hella challenging for people who are afraid of leaving their comfort zones. You know the saying that fortune favors the bold? Well, that’s the motto to live by in fire horse years.

So if you’ve been sitting on decisions, hemming and hawing and waiting to figure out when the right time will be to finally do the thing? Well…fire horse has only one thing to say: Just. Effin’. Do. It.

Fire horse predictions

That being said, while fire horse energy may want to just gallop through life’s challenges, it’s not to say YOLO-ing through this year is going to be the best strategic decision for you personally. Every zodiac sign will experience the energy of the year differently, so I’ve compiled a list of the Chinese zodiac signs and what each one can expect in 2026. As a bonus, I’ve also added some insights from Western astrology for each sign. (Not every Western sign will be included, so if you don’t see yours, don’t worry—it just means your sign doesn’t have to worry as much.)

If you don’t know your Chinese sign, you can look it up here by your birth year. And if you want an even more accurate prediction, also check the horoscope for your “day” sign. It’s different from your year sign, and anybody who’s studied Bazi (Chinese astrology) knows that it’s the day sign that’s actually the important one. If you don’t know your day sign, you can use this free Bazi calculator and find the animal under the “day” column.

Rat

Last year felt like the wind was at your back, but 2026 may feel more like you’re walking into it. The fire horse year brings a year of tests for rats, who might face more obstacles, more scrutiny, and more encounters with authority figures. This isn't the year for shortcuts or charming your way around the rules. Dot your i's, cross your t's, and do the work the way it's supposed to be done. The rats who cut corners may find those corners cutting back.

Western add-ons: Taurus rats get a career boost from Jupiter, which softens the friction with authority. Cancer and Scorpio rats should keep their heads down at work because taskmaster Saturn's watching, so stay out of drama and let your work speak for itself. Aries rats are in the pressure cooker and they shouldn’t fight it, because this is the year the cosmos wants to turn you into a diamond. Stay upright, stay true, and let the compression do its work.

Ox

This year is a step up from last year. The fire horse brings support and opportunities for the ox, but here's the catch: you have to be ready for them. Opportunities don't wait around. If you don't have a plan in place, they'll pass you by without a second glance. This is a year to be proactive rather than reactive. Know what you want so you can recognize it when it shows up.

Western add-on: This is especially true for the Leo ox. Jupiter will be in your sign this year, and Jupiter is generous, but not patient. Its gifts can pass like ships in the night if you're not actively reaching for them. Don't assume good things will just land in your lap, so position yourself to receive them. Luck is 90 percent preparation.

Tiger

The fire horse year puts a target on your back, tiger. You may find yourself on the receiving end of gossip, backstabbing, or petty sabotage. And if that happens, it's because people are jealous of your successes. But here's the trick: don't let them distract you. All the hardship you endured and work you put into your dreams in 2025 can pay off this year, but only if you tune out the haters and stay in your lane. The drama wants your attention. Don't give it.

Western add-on: This is especially important for Aries and Cancer tigers. Neptune—planet of delusion and deception—is affecting Aries on a personal level and Cancer's career sector. The fog of other people's nonsense will be thick. Don't get embroiled in it. Keep your eyes on your own paper.

Rabbit

This is a year of blessings, joy, and support for the rabbit. The fire horse brings a generous energy your way, and the more gratitude and generosity you practice, the more it gets returned to you. This is also a great year for relationships—new connections and existing bonds both have room to flourish.

The rule for rabbits this year: whatever joy you emit comes back multiplied. Be confident. Be happy. (And if you're not feeling it, fake it—you'll make it.)

Western add-on: Leo rabbits benefit the most, since Jupiter is in your sign and works exactly this way. Expand your optimism and Jupiter expands your luck. Aquarius rabbits should pay special attention to relationships—Jupiter is lighting up your partnership sector, making this an excellent year for meeting someone significant or deepening an existing commitment.

Dragon

After your big year in 2025, the fire horse asks dragons to pump the brakes a little. This year is a year for steadiness, so avoid risky decisions, be diplomatic, and sidestep conflict where you can. Communication is especially important this year. Be crystal clear in your relationships to avoid misunderstandings that could have been prevented with a few extra words. This is a year for taking accountability in how you interact with others. If things go sideways, ask yourself what role you played.

Western add-on: Libra dragons need to take this advice to heart the most. Neptune is fogging up your house of partnership, making it easy to deceive yourself (or be deceived) about relationship dynamics. Saturn is also in the picture, and here's the thing about Saturn: it either brings hardship or stability, and which one you get depends entirely on how responsibly you show up. Choose wisely.

Snake

This is a year of personal growth for the snake. The fire horse brings potential for improving your mental health and spiritual wellness, so if you've been feeling untethered or lost, this is your year to get grounded. Organize your thoughts through journaling, meditation, or literally organizing your physical space. Sometimes outer order creates inner calm. Careerwise, prosperity is available—but only outside your comfort zone. The goods won't come to you while you're playing it safe. You'll need to put yourself out there if you want them.

Western add-on: Taurus snakes may feel particularly foggy this year, as Neptune is clouding your subconscious realm. Don't be ashamed to reach out to a counselor or therapist if you need someone to help you process. Sometimes we need a guide when the internal landscape gets murky.

Horse

It's your year, horse! However, in Chinese astrology, hosting the year doesn't mean smooth sailing. It actually means cosmic evaluation, so you’ll want to expect some turbulence. This doesn't mean nothing will go your way, though. It means the universe is simply paying attention to you. Be irresponsible and sloppy, and the cosmos will issue a fine. Rise up, work hard, and be accountable, and the cosmos will reward you. This is a year for stepping up and proving what you're made of.

Western add-on: Aries horses are already being tested by the Saturn-Neptune conjunction, so you're getting a double dose of "show me what you've got" energy. Don't complain about the pressure. Just do your best and answer it.

Special note for 1966 horses: If you're turning 60 this year, celebrate BIG. This is the first time the Fire Horse has returned since you were born, and tradition holds that a big celebration at 60 helps ensure safe passage through this threshold year. Throw the party. Gather your people. Mark the moment. It’s said that the loud noises and bright colors from big parties scare off the gremlins and ghosties and keep them from wreaking havoc. (Don’t ask—I don't make the rules.)

Goat

Let's be honest, 2025 just sucked for the goat. You had zero benefactor stars in your sign last year, and you probably felt it in the form of feeling like you couldn’t catch a break. But the page has turned! (Yay!) It's a new day. (Yay!)

Opportunities will come to you in 2026 if you network and reach out. Success is possible if you set achievable goals. Like the mountain goat you are, don't stare at the summit—just focus on the next step and execute.

Western add-on: Libra goats get an extra boost in networking, as Jupiter is blessing your house of community. Reach out and let people help you. Leo goats are due for a big glow-up, but it's going to come with changes—specifically, you may outgrow your current social circles. Jupiter in your sign, combined with Uranus and Pluto shaking up your social sectors, means the friend group is shifting. Let it happen. You're not losing people; you're making room.

Monkey

This year is for taking action and expanding your horizons, monkey. The fire horse wants you to grow—through learning, through travel, through pushing past what's familiar. This isn't a year for retreating into your comfort zone. Take initiative. Seek out new knowledge. Say yes to the thing that scares you a little.

Western add-on: This message lands hardest for Leo and Sagittarius monkeys. Leo monkeys should focus on personal growth because Jupiter in your sign is inviting you to become a bigger version of yourself. Sagittarius monkeys should book the trip abroad or enroll in the course, because travel and education are your expansion paths this year.

Rooster

Roosters are rising in 2026. The fire horse brings opportunities around career, personal goals, and relationships—but only if you have a plan and act on it. The cosmos is offering, not delivering. Most importantly, this is a year of shedding dead weight. Outdated jobs, stale relationships, people who no longer fit, dreams you've outgrown? They need to go. You can't grab what's coming if your hands are full of what was.

Western add-on: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, and Aquarius roosters have massive potential to realign their careers and relationships this year. The planets are supporting a reset, but you have to be willing to let go of what you’ve outgrown first.

Dog

This is a major career year for the dog. The cosmic air is rife with possibilities for promotions and advancements, but you'll need to think outside the box to seize them. It's your uniqueness and creativity that will give you the edge.

Fair warning: once you start to rise, the haters will try to drag you down. Don't give them your time or energy. Eyes forward. Onwards, and upwards!

Western add-on: Aries and Cancer dogs are going through a major career shift. Both Saturn and Neptune are asking you to build something that's both real and meaningful, so make sure you're grounded in a clear "why." This isn't about climbing for climbing's sake. Leo and Taurus dogs? The sky is your limit this year. Jupiter is on your side, so dream big and move.

Pig

Along with the goat, pigs had a rough 2025. You were clashing with the Grand Duke Star, and the obstacles were real. However, the page has turned and 2026 is the year of your re-debut. Prosperity comes through other people this year, so get out there! Network, socialize, expand your friend group. This is not the year to be a homebody. And when conflicts arise (they will), choose soft power. Avoid head-to-head confrontation. Your strength this year comes from diplomacy—you'll attract way more flies with honey.

Western add-on: Scorpio pigs should also focus on health this year. Make efforts to improve your nutrition, get moving, and schedule those checkups you've been putting off. Your body is asking for attention.
