Astrology with Alice: Welcome to Astrology with Alice, a monthly astrology column aimed at helping readers understand the vibes of the month ahead in plain English. As a Taiwanese immigrant who grew up in Los Angeles, I specialize in combining western astrology with eastern philosophy. I’ve taught modern astrology through the lens of Buddhism and Taoism, and I also draw from the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Knowing the movements of the planets can help us make decisions around our careers, relationships, family. As the planets move around in the sky, they shift the energetic vibes we experience on Earth, and I believe in flowing with energy instead of fighting it—to work smarter, not harder. So join me on our monthly planetary lowdowns and learn how you, too, can ride the cosmic waves!
Every so often, we get a month during which the cosmos just wants us to sit down. And October is one of those months. There's a ton of retrograde energy happening this month that's going to compel us to slow down, pace ourselves, and go inward rather than project outward. We don't just have one retrograde this month, but two, and both of them are happening in the sign Scorpio—a sign whose energy is already pretty moody, intense, and contractive.
Consider the gentle alternative of reflecting instead, because retrogrades are all about the three Rs: reflect, reconsider, reevaluate.
Venus starts it off by going retrograde on Saturday, while Mercury goes retrograde on Oct. 24, and both of them turn back around on the same day. So if you've been planning to launch a project, propose an idea, sign something, or reinvent yourself this month, I'd like you to consider the gentle alternative of reflecting instead, because retrogrades are all about the three Rs: reflect, reconsider, reevaluate.
Yeah, I know. Womp, womp. None of those feel like we’re actually doing anything, especially in a capitalist world that values output and advertises time as some linear progression, rather than a spiralic experience. However, retrogrades are the universe's built-in review period, and reflection and review are vital to the success of any endeavor. And when two personal planets* rewind in the same sign at the same time, taking a beat to reconsider things is basically the entire assignment. Scorpio is the sign of everything we keep beneath the surface, so this October, we're going to dig deep.
(*The personal planets that are capable of going retrograde in astrology are Mercury, Venus, and Mars, and they don’t retrograde as often as the personal planets. I sort of don’t care as much about the other planets retrograding because they spend, like, half the year in retrograde. I’m not exaggerating.)
So let's talk about the actual retrograde dates:
Venus will retrograde from Saturday to Nov. 13, starting in Scorpio and finishing in Libra. Venus's shadow started back on Aug. 31 and won't fully clear until Dec. 15. Mercury, on the other hand, will retrograde from Oct. 24 through Nov. 13 entirely in the sign of Scorpio, and Mercury's shadow begins Sunday and clears around Nov. 29. And then both planets stop retrograding on Nov. 13.
(Think of shadow periods as the warm-up and cool-down periods of a retrograde, when we’re not in the full throes of retrograde-y weirdness, but some wonkiness is already or still there.)
For me, both planets coming out of retrograde together on the same day isn't a coincidence. It tells me that the two assignments are actually one review, and the teacher is the sign that the retrogrades are happening in—Scorpio.
What Scorpio wants from us
Named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, Venus rules love, money, beauty, pleasure, and our sense of self-worth. When she retrogrades, all of those things go into audit mode. Exes reappear—in your inbox, in your dreams, in the produce section. Money matters resurface. New hairstyles don't deliver on their promises. In astrology, we say that Venus is "in detriment" in Scorpio, which basically just means that she's in unfamiliar territory. Venus likes pretty things and for people to behave elegantly and beautifully. She likes pretty gardens and ballrooms, but Scorpio is more like a dark basement that she cannot decorate her way out of. She has to face the uncomfortable things we don’t speak of in daylight and actually say the truth, even if it’s ugly.
Mercury, meanwhile, rules communication, technology, travel, and information, which is why Mercury retrograde comes with the standard warnings: to back up your data, to reread your emails before you send them, to leave early for the airport, and, for the love of all, to make sure you’re not replying to all. (Awkward.) I’ve shared my Mercury retrograde survival guides before.
But people forget that Mercury is also the planet of omens. In Chinese, Mercury is literally called the "water star," and all three of this year's Mercury retrogrades have happened in water signs (Pisces, Cancer, and now Scorpio). Water is the element of intuition, and water sign retrogrades ask us to read the signs with our inner knowing. In mythology, Hermes, Mercury's Greek counterpart, guided souls into the underworld, and he was the only god who could freely travel in and out of it. That's his job this month. Venus is going down into the dark while Mercury walks beside her and translates for her.
Scorpio is a sign of depth, so it doesn't just ask, "Do I still want this?" Instead, Scorpio probes deeper and asks, "What am I actually getting from this? What is it costing me, and who actually holds the power here?" October's double retrogrades in Scorpio may highlight the resentments we haven’t resolved, or they might bring our attention to the shared accounts that were never quite fair splits. We’re being invited to have the uncomfortable conversations we've been avoiding in order to stay pleasant.
Scorpio is a sign of depth, so it doesn't just ask, "Do I still want this?" Instead, Scorpio probes deeper and asks, "What am I actually getting from this? What is it costing me, and who actually holds the power here?"
Whenever I think of Venus retrogrades, I think of the Sumerian myth of Inanna, the Queen of Heaven, who takes off her crown and her jewels and descends into the underworld. There, she dies, is resurrected, then returns to the heavens. Inanna goes into the underworld to find out what she is when everything superficial is stripped away. Her nakedness represents vulnerability, and that's what we're doing this October—taking the journey into our own underworld to reveal our tender spots.
So what’s the point of Mercury and Venus digging up vulnerable things like Scorpionic rat terriers? It’s because we can’t heal if we keep pretending we’re okay when we’re not. The point isn’t to punish ourselves or to make ourselves miserable, but, rather, it’s to see what’s not doing so great with our relationships, finances, how we value our work, and our sense of self-worth so that we know where to even begin the healing process.
Hence, chill. Don't push. Reflect. And most importantly, don't rush the process.
When Inanna was resurrected, everything she removed was given back to her during her ascent to her throne. However, she left some of her things and people behind in the underworld. She didn’t put everything back on—and neither should you.
Sign by sign
Here's where the Scorpio review will land for each sign. (Read for both your sun sign and your rising sign. If you don’t know your rising sign, you can use this free calculator.)
Aries
Something you share with another person is about to get an honest review, and for Aries, it’s likely to be about money. Is there a loan you're still owed, a debt you forgot about, a joint account where one person deposits and the other one spends? Or maybe it’s emotional instead—did you trust someone, and is that decision now costing you? Here’s my advice: don't storm out and don't sign anything. Get the real numbers, sit with them, and by mid-November you'll know exactly what to renegotiate.
Taurus
The retrogrades want you to consider your closest relationships, like a spouse, a business partner, or the friend you talk to every day. Over the next six weeks, the thing the two of you have been carefully not saying is going to get said, probably clumsily, probably twice. An ex may also reappear right as you're wondering whether the current relationship is working, and that timing is a test. Have the hard conversations, skip the ultimatums, and don't make any official decisions until after Nov. 13.
Gemini
The retrogrades want you to review your approach to your job and your body. Is the job worth the paycheck? A former boss or client may call with an offer that looks better than it is. And the health thing you've been putting off since summer is about to become impossible to ignore, so book the appointment or hit the gym. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a look at your schedule and see where the bloat is. Reclaim your time and the overwhelm will resolve.
Cancer
For you, this retrograde season is about rediscovering romance and creativity. An old flame might resurface or an old creative project you abandoned might start nagging at you. Either way, the question is whether the joy was real or you were performing it for someone else. Don't rekindle anything on nostalgia alone, but do finish the thing you left half done. That will give you more clarity about yourself than the ex will.
Leo
The home life is about to get interesting. Old dynamics may resurface with new information. Maybe a conversation with a parent that reveals something you didn't know, or a property or inheritance matter that needs attention. Underneath that, you may realize that the way you think about money and loyalty was handed to you, and it isn't actually how you think. This retrograde season is an invitation for you to reconsider which of your family's rules you still agree with. Some things are worth keeping, and some things you leave at the gate.
Virgo
The conversation you didn't finish earlier this year is coming back for round two, and with Mercury joining the retrograde on Oct. 24, possibly round three. (Sorry.) It's probably with a sibling, a neighbor, or a friend who functions like a sibling, and they need the honest version of something from you. Reread everything before you send it, because your tone will land heavier than you mean it to. And if you've been rehearsing the same speech in the shower for a week, that's Scorpio telling you to just rip the bandaid off and say it plainly—one and done.
Libra
The retrogrades want you to reevaluate your stories around money and self-worth. Old money matters turn up first, like an unpaid invoice, a loan you never chased, a subscription you forgot to cancel, or a discount you gave someone who never noticed. Behind them lies the bigger question of what you've been undercharging or under-asking to keep people comfortable. (Very on-brand for peacekeeping Libra.) Venus is your ruler and she ends this retrograde in your sign on Nov. 13, which is your cue to hold your value.
Scorpio
Both retrogrades are happening in your sign, so you're in the show and not in the audience this time. Old versions of you come back to piss you off in the form of a photo, an ex, maybe a photo of said ex, an ambition you outgrew, an old friend who still talks to you like you're 20. The urge to blow up your whole look or reinvent yourself overnight will be strong, but resist it. The new you is cooking underneath the surface and it won’t be ready for the public until after Nov. 13. Meanwhile, sort through what comes up and discard what doesn’t fit who you are now—even if it fit who you used to be.
Sagittarius
The retrograde energy will play out behind closed doors. Dreams will get vivid, sleep will get strange, and someone you never got closure with might show up in your inbox or your subconscious (or both). Do the grieving and don't restart the story. You may also spot the hidden cost—emotional or financial—of carrying the outdated past around with you. You'll have little to show anyone for these weeks, and that's fine. Rest more than you think you need to because your season is next and you'll come back stronger in December.
Capricorn
Your friend group gets audited. An old friendship returns with the reason it ended still attached, and a group you belong to reveals who's actually calling the shots. A shared dream you made with someone years ago comes up for the honest question of whether you still want it. Scorpio is asking about loyalty: who shows up for you, and who you keep around out of habit. Let the guest list get shorter and truer. Don't join anything new until December.
Aquarius
Your career is where the retrograde wants your attention. A former employer, a shelved project, or a role you walked away from comes back with an offer or a question, and it will be tempting. Before saying yes, though, look hard at what's being asked of you in exchange for the status. If you've been trading pieces of yourself for a title, this is the month you’ll feel it. Hold any launch or big public move until December. A chapter of your professional life may need to close before the right one can open.
Pisces
The retrogrades want you to have a big think about your beliefs and your bigger plans, so it’ll feel like the parking brake got pulled while you were coasting down the road. A trip might get rescheduled, a program you were considering maybe gets reconsidered, a philosophy you built a few years ago suddenly reads differently in the light of the present. A teacher, a mentor, or a long-distance love returns with unfinished business. Underneath all of it is one question: how many of your beliefs are actually yours, and how many were inherited? The delays are the universe’s way of offering you an opportunity to course correct.
