Astrology with Alice: Welcome to Astrology with Alice, a monthly astrology column aimed at helping readers understand the vibes of the month ahead in plain English. As a Taiwanese immigrant who grew up in Los Angeles, I specialize in combining western astrology with eastern philosophy. I’ve taught modern astrology through the lens of Buddhism and Taoism, and I also draw from the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Knowing the movements of the planets can help us make decisions around our careers, relationships, family. As the planets move around in the sky, they shift the energetic vibes we experience on Earth, and I believe in flowing with energy instead of fighting it—to work smarter, not harder. So join me on our monthly planetary lowdowns and learn how you, too, can ride the cosmic waves!

The planet Neptune has moved into the sign Aries, thus wrapping up its 14-year residency in Pisces. It’ll stay in Aries until 2039, so this is a long transit, and it signals a historic shift in what we are subconsciously attracted to—everything from trends in music and fashion, to what we aspire to become, will take on a markedly different form. Neptune shapes our spirituality and idealism, and, through that, it affects our art and expression.

Neptune’s effects are difficult to see in the day-to-day, but they get clearer when we step back and look at the big picture. The planet operates like an invisible hand guiding our fascination, and when you look at the trends in fashion and especially music, you can see its influence through the decades.

Neptune and the arts

Famed astrologer Steven Forrest laid out a case for the Neptune’s influence on popular music in The Book of Neptune, in which he maps out each shift in musical trends according to the movement of Neptune through the signs.

Forrest points out that Elvis’ breakthrough hit “Heartbreak Hotel” was released the year Neptune entered Scorpio in 1956. Scorpio is often regarded as the sexiest sign, and Elvis’ scandalous dance moves and lyrics lived up to that reputation. Loud AF heavy metal then came onto the scene in 1970, which was the same year that Neptune moved into the loud AF sign Sagittarius. (Sorry, Sag, I couldn’t resist. Love you!) Then, what happened to the music scene in 1989 when Neptune entered the conservative sign Capricorn? Country music saw a mainstream comeback with Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Travis Tritt comprising what’s referred to now as the “Class of ‘89.” And when Neptune subsequently moved into techy and modern Aquarius in 1998, we started downloading music through online services like Napster and moved our tunes onto devices like the newly launched iPod. We also saw a rise in electronic elements in music. (Remember how bionic early Gaga sounded?) And while Forrest’s book was published in the early days of Neptune’s time in Pisces, his theory still holds for the rest of that decade. Adele’s most popular album, the very soulful and emotional album 21, debuted in 2011, when Neptune entered the dreamy and sensitive sign Pisces, and we have been awash ever since with ambient, atmospheric, and melancholic tunes.

Well, that is until now. Now, Neptune is in Aries—the sign of the warrior—which is going to be sooooo different. Aries is assertive, pioneering, and has a strong sense of selfhood (which is why Aries people are often accused of being selfish), and we are definitely going to see the fiery spirit of Aries reflected throughout art and culture over the next decade and a half. Even though we’ve only talked about musical examples so far, Neptune’s artistic influence will reach every form of art. Dance, fashion, visual media, advertisement, cosmetics—all these industries will take a turn towards a more Aries aesthetic. If you work in any of these fields, take note and anticipate the change in the direction of the trends. (Basically, think less Olivia Rodrigo and more Xena, Warrior Princess. If I just dated myself and you have no idea who that is, consider Daenerys in her Mother-of-Dragons era.)

The potential for conflict

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the dark side of Aries, which is its association with conflict and war. The last time Neptune went into Aries was April 13, 1861. Do you know what happened the day before? The Civil War started.

The movements of the planets don’t cause things to happen, but they reflect the inner and outer realities of what’s happening here on Earth. I’m also not a fan of fearmongering and I encourage everybody I work with to approach planetary transits from a place of empowerment. However, given that we have more than one transit happening this year that have historically coincided with conflict (Pluto is in Aquarius and Uranus will be in Gemini, and I mentioned back in January that the last time this happened was during the American Revolution), I recommend being more cautious and careful with your yearly planning. Yes, we need to live our lives freely and we shouldn’t let something like astrology control our every move, but these are occurrences that have historically shown themselves to be potentially volatile. (Potentially volatile. And even if they are, it’ll be temporary. Don’t freak out. We’re going to be okay. Just maybe don’t blow your savings on a trip to the Maldives this year.)

Neptune and dreams

Neptune is the planet of dreams and mysticism. It speaks to our yearning and desire for transcendence. And whatever sign it’s in tells us something about the way in which we want to experience elevation and exaltation. If you read that and now you’re wondering “what?!”  then congratulations, you’re picking up on Neptune’s inexplicable vagueness, as well. (I personally dread predicting what Neptune’s going to do in my client consultations because it’s such a vibe and it’s hard to be precise with it.)

The best way to nutshell what the change that Neptune moving into Aries will mean for us is to think of Neptune as representing our collective dream. Since 2011, we’ve been dreaming the dream of the mystic and of the poet (the archetypes of Pisces). Now, we’re going to dream like visionaries. Like pioneers. Like warriors. Like freakin’ ARIES. I believe that Neptune’s hold over our collective dreams is why it seems to have so much power over the direction of our trends. Artists and mystics alike tap into the same magical, unconscious space where our dreams live, and that’s Neptune’s domain, where nothing is concrete. (And also why it is such a pain to predict in readings, because it’s all so immaterial.)

So now that Neptune is leaving Pisces, the mystic must come out of meditation. The poet might need to put down the pen to pick up the (proverbial) sword. Now, as Neptune enters Aries, it’s a time for action, when we are going to feel called to do more and fight for our ideals. (And this is why I’m not surprised that the last time Neptune was in Aries, we fought to free the oppressed.) On a personal level, we will also feel called to fight for our dreams. If we have an idea, a vision, or a dream to champion, Neptune in Aries will inspire bold action. It is, in fact, daring us to dream.

Neptune will stay in Aries until 2039, so it’s important to remember that Neptune’s changes will take time to unfold. We have a lot of time to work with this energy, and if you’re curious as to what area of life Neptune will try to unlock your courage, check out the list below. Look for your sign as well as your rising sign. (If you don’t know your rising sign, you can use this free online tool.)

The astrological sign for aries.Aries

Aries will be the most personally affected by Neptune. It’s a time for reinvention and to try something new. Most of all, it’s important to be honest with yourself and recognize when you’re avoiding your problems. Those born during the first few days of Aries (March 20-22) are feeling the full force of Neptune’s invitation to answer the call of their soul’s most heartfelt wishes already. Any confusion felt is a part of Neptune’s “ego-shedding,” and all Aries will experience this at some point over the next 14 years. Engaging in spiritual and artistic activities is highly recommended if you’re feeling muddled or directionless.

The astrological sign for taurusTaurus

Super practical Taurus might feel some confusion and frustration that you just can’t put a finger on. This feeling of ungroundedness can feel irritating for such a pragmatic sign, but with Neptune in your house of spirituality, you’re being asked to open up to the unseen world of spirit. Many Taurus will feel more psychic during this time and feel the pull towards contemplation. However, if you’re feeling too sensitive, learn to meditate and find a woo-woo friend to teach you how to cleanse and ground yourself. You’ll also be able to recalibrate yourself more easily when you’re in solitude.

The astrological sign for geminiGemini

This will be the decade of finding friends and community that are more spiritually or artistically aligned with you. You’ll also be drawn to idealistic causes. All of this is wonderful, but since Neptune is also associated with delusion and deception, please keep in mind that you’re also at risk of being taken in by false friends, false causes, and false prophets. Be careful to not over-romanticize! (And don’t disparage when you feel disappointed by your friends—you’re finding your tribe.)

The astrological sign for cancer.Cancer

Neptune will be in your house of career and public honors, so you may find yourself dissatisfied with what you do for a living. The role that you play, once fulfilling, may seem hollow. If you can see the possibility of this happening already, it’s time to get in front of the problem and start working towards a position that is more satisfying. Don’t wait for Neptune to start. And, who knows? You might become an artist or a healer—both fit the vibe of Neptune!

The astrological sign for leo.Leo

Ah, Leo. Neptune will be particularly Neptune-y for you. Neptune really wants you to open up to faith and belief. The next 14 years will see an increase in spiritual yearning. (Please note the very purposeful use of the word “spiritual” as opposed to “religious.”) You’ll want to discover big truths, find the meaning of life, unlock great esoteric mysteries. If you are an artist, your creativity will increase as you tap into your imagination as a way to channel your spirituality and newfound philosophies. Traveling will also be especially enriching for you. In your search to acquire wisdom, however, beware of false gurus.

The astrological sign for virgo.Virgo

Like Taurus, you might develop psychic abilities or strengthen your intuition because Neptune wants to transform you on a deeply mystical level. The difference is that you’ll be asked to confront your fears in the process, so don’t worry if you find yourself beginning to worry about things like death. Financially, you’ll want to be careful with who you trust to handle your money because Neptune can indicate the possibility of financial deception. Don’t be too trusting with shared resources—believe people but don’t let that stop you from checking up on the situation.

The astrological sign for libra.Libra

Neptune is in your house of partnership. Karmic encounters are in store for you. During this time, you can experience exaltation through partnership as well as deception. It’s important to remember that when it comes to matters of love, you may be wearing rose-colored glasses. You might be holding onto unrealistic expectations, so be aware of that to avoid suffering disillusionment. It’s not easy for Libras to maintain boundaries, but having healthy boundaries is doubly important when a planet as wishy-washy as Neptune is affecting your relationship sector.

The astrological sign for scorpio.Scorpio

The boundaries may weaken around your schedules and routines, so set up healthy expectations when it comes to your workload so that you don’t overextend yourself. You may also experience more fatigue, as Neptune may affect your physical health. If chronic, mystery ailments emerge, they’re likely related to your stress levels. (If you’re more tired than usual, you also just need to sleep more.) Also, your body may be more sensitive to substances, so be careful with alcohol, drugs, and medication.

The astrological sign for sagittarius.Sagittarius

This is a super creative and fun time for Sagittarius. Neptune has entered your house of art and romance, so it’s the perfect time to get into your creative flow and to light the fires of passion. The spirit yearns to reveal itself through artistic expression, so even if you’re not particularly creative yourself, you can immerse yourself in art by listening to music, watching performances, and going to art exhibits. If you are creative, then this is a time when spirituality meets creativity, so doing spiritual activities like meditation will help to enhance your artistic output!

The astrological sign for capricorn.Capricorn

Home is your place of escape, and your home needs to be your sanctuary. You may also feel the call to live near water. Like the other earth signs (Taurus and Virgo), Neptune will affect you on a more internal and spiritual level, so you, too, may feel a strengthening of your intuition. You may also feel a call to learn more about your ancestors in response to feelings of rootlessness. Family may encroach on your boundaries, so if that’s the case, you’ll want to set healthy limits with your relatives. Finally, Capricorns with plumbing issues should get them resolved, as Neptune in the house of home can manifest as flooding issues (because let’s not forget Neptune is named after the god of the sea).

The astrological sign for aquarius.Aquarius

Your mindset and thinking are going to take turns in a more intuitive and creative direction. The more mystically inclined Aquarius will welcome this, but the more scientific Aquarius will just need to let go and surrender to the cosmic wave. I wouldn’t be surprised if you find yourself daydreaming more, and even finding it more difficult to focus. That’s because your mental faculty wants to dream more than analyze under Neptune’s influence. The one thing to watch out for, however, is miscommunication, because how something is meant may not be how it’s received. If you’re communicating something important, don’t take it just at face value—practice discernment.

The astrological sign for pisces.Pisces

Money will matter less to you because you want to be defined by more than just monetary value. You’re seeking meaning in a higher sense and you’re more interested in your soul’s worth than just your material worth. While this idealism is noble, remember that money is still necessary and stay on top of your budget and finances, because Neptune can cloud your judgment when it comes to money matters. You could even enter a “Neptunian” career, perhaps something in the creative arts or the healing arts, or maybe even something spiritual. You might do charity work. Whatever it turns out to be, you’ll feel the call to do work that’s meaningful.
