"Barbie" may have the most nominations, but it's a big year for Asian representation, especially in animation

As Hollywood emerged from a year of industry-wide strikes, award season now takes center stage, and we couldn't be more excited to applaud the Asian and Asian American films and TV projects that weathered the storm and secured well-deserved nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.

Amidst the glitz and glamor, these nominations stand as a testament to the unwavering resilience and exceptional talent of the Asian community, staying golden in the spotlight.

A24’s Past Lives clinched five nominations, including Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Picture, Non-English Language. Celine Song nabbed a best director and best screenplay nomination, while Greta Lee is nominated for Best Actress.

Netflix’s May December earned four nominations. In their Musical or Comedy category, the Todd Haynes’ film earned a Best Motion Picture nomination and acting nominations for Charles Melton, Natalie Portman, and Julianne Moore. The dark film is a breakthrough role for Korean American Melton.

Most notably, animated works were a standout. All five nominees for the Best Motion Picture, Animated were either API or featured Asian American talent. These include Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which stars Hailee Steinfeld. Lastly, Elemental, directed by Korean American Peter Sohn and starring Leah Lewis, and Wish, directed by Thai animator Fawn Veerasunthorn kept Disney in the running.

Joe Hisaishi also received a Best Score nomination for The Boy and the Heron. This year, the Golden Globes introduced a new category for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a way to recognize blockbusters and box office smashes of the year. Here, John Wick: Chapter 4, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie all scored nominations.

Over on the television side, the A24 and Netflix dark comedy Beef received three nominations: Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, and acting nominations for Steven Yeun and Ali Wong.

Outside of Asian recognition, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie achieved a historic 9 nominations, making it the second most-nominated movie in the organization's more-than-80-year history.

As for what this means as an indicator of the Oscars, acknowledgment at the Globes will help bolster the profiles of Past Lives and May December. Both films have earned various honors across industry awards and film festivals. Animated nominations don’t tend to deviate too much from one award show to the next, meaning a few of these might show up at the Oscars again too.
