Alysa Liu wins women’s world figure skating championship

After retiring three years ago and coming back to the sport in October 2024, she's the first American woman to win Worlds in 19 years

Three years after retiring from competitive figure skating, Alysa Liu made an extraordinary return in October 2024 and capped her comeback by winning the ISU World Figure Skating Championships on Sunday. The 19-year-old American skater delivered a commanding performance in both the short program and free skate, securing the gold medal in the women’s competition, with a total score of 222.97. Skating to “MacArthur Park Suite” by Donna Summer, Liu captivated the audience with her precision and artistry, becoming the first American woman in nearly two decades to claim the world title.

Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto earned silver with 217.98 points (146.95 in free skate), while Mone Chiba, also of Japan, took bronze with 215.24 points (141.80 in free skate). 

In the ice dance, Americans Madison Chock, who is of mixed Asian and Native Hawaiian heritage, and Evan Bates three-peated, claiming their third straight world championship with a total of 222.06 points, scoring 90.18 in rhythm dance and 131.88 in free dance. 

In the men’s competition, Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov secured silver with 278.47 (192.70 in free skate), narrowly edging out Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, who earned 278.19 (171.10 in free skate) for bronze.

Japan’s dominance also extended to pairs as Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara won gold with 219.79 (143.22 free skate) further showcasing the strength of Asian athletes at this year’s championship.
