From heart-fluttering rom-coms, to dark fantasy thrillers, and award-winning dramas, there’s something for everyone to get lost in this fall. Here is our latest roundup of the projects we’re most excited for.
The Murky Stream
This nine-episode series teases a sweeping historical drama set in a turbulent Joseon era Korea, in which morality and survival clash along the once-pristine Gyeonggang River. Rowoon stars as Siyul, a man running from a shadowy past who becomes a gangster; Shin Ye-eun plays Choi Eun, a bright and principled merchant-in-the-making; and Park Seo-ham portrays Jung-cheon, whose dream is to serve as a just government official.
The Murky Stream premieres on Disney+ Friday, with three episodes at launch, then two episodes weekly.
The Smashing Machine
Dwayne Johnson trades in his blockbuster charisma for a raw, career-defining turn as MMA and UFC legend Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine. Directed by Benny Safdie, the film follows Kerr’s rise through the brutal world of mixed martial arts while balancing a turbulent personal life with his then-wife Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt). The film earned a 15-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, leaving Johnson visibly emotional, and Safdie took home the Silver Lion for Best Director.
The Smashing Machine premieres in theaters on Oct. 3.
Genie, Make a Wish
Kim Woo-bin and Suzy reunite nearly a decade after their beloved pairing in Uncontrollably Fond for the magical, high-stakes rom-com Genie, Make a Wish. Woo-bin plays a devilish genie who’s spent centuries tempting humans with corrupt desires, only to meet his match in Ka-young (Suzy), a stoic woman who refuses to play by his rules. Instead of wishing, she challenges him to a best-of-five bet—with her life on the line if she loses.
Genie, Make a Wish premieres on Netflix on Oct. 3.
Boots
Miles Heizer leads Netflix’s new dramedy Boots, a sharp, heartfelt coming-of-age story set in the 1990s U.S. Marine Corps, when being gay in the military was still banned. Inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, the series follows Cameron Cope (Heizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh) as they survive boot camp, clash with authority, and find themselves in a system designed to break them down.
Boots premieres on Netflix on Oct. 9.
Would You Marry Me?
Choi Woo-sik and Jung So-min team up for a charming rom-com about a marketing lead and a designer who enter a fake marriage for 90 days. What begins as a desperate plan to secure a newlywed townhouse quickly spirals into an unexpected journey of clashing personalities, comic mishaps, and maybe even real love.
Would You Marry Me premieres on Disney+ on Oct. 10.
Typhoon Family
This K-drama revisits the turbulence of South Korea’s 1997 financial crisis through the eyes of a generation forced to grow up overnight. Lee Jun-ho stars as Kang Tae-poong, a former member of the flashy “Orange Tribe” whose carefree life ends when he’s thrust into running a failing trading company. Kim Min-ha plays Oh Mi-seon, the steadfast eldest daughter balancing family duty with her own ambitions.
Typhloon Family premieres on Netflix on Oct. 11.
Chainsaw Man: Rez Arc
This film picks up right where the hit anime left off and dives into one of the manga’s most beloved storylines. Produced by MAPPA, the film follows Denji, now a Devil Hunter with Special Division 4, as a chance encounter with the mysterious café worker Reze pulls him into a whirlwind of romance and danger. Expect MAPPA’s signature, visceral animation and a darker, more emotional turn for Denji as the Reze arc unfolds on the big screen.
Chainsaw Man: Rez Arc hits theaters worldwide on Oct. 24.
Left-Handed Girl
Shih-Ching Tsou makes her solo directorial debut with Left-Handed Girl, a tender coming-of-age drama set in her childhood city of Taipei. The story follows a single mother and her two daughters as they return from the countryside to run a night market stall, navigating family tensions, tradition, and generational secrets, especially when the youngest, left-handed daughter is forbidden from using her “devil hand.” The film premiered in Critics’ Week at Cannes and is Taiwan’s submission for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards.
Left-Handed Girl premieres in select theaters on Nov. 14 and on Netflix Nov. 28.
Wicked: For Good
Elphaba and Glinda’s story is coming to its spellbinding conclusion. Universal has unveiled the final trailer for Wicked: For Good, the second installment of the two-part adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. The film picks up where the first left off, following Elphaba and Glinda as their friendship is tested, their identities solidify as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, and the events that reshape Oz unfold. The trailer also teases the first glimpses of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion.
Wicked: For Good premieres in theaters Nov. 21.
Hamnet
Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet adapts Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel into a tender portrait of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal), his wife Agnes (Jessie Buckley), and the devastating loss of their son. Following its world premiere at Telluride, the film earned the coveted People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, cementing it as a major awards-season contender.
Hamnet premieres in limited theaters on Nov. 27 with a nationwide release on Dec. 12.
